What is a system board and why is it so effective?

A system board (often also called a family board) is a method of literally laying inner images and unconscious relationship structures „on the table“. By setting up figures, complex dynamics suddenly become visible.

This „aha effect“ from the view from above is based on three psychological mechanisms:

• Externalization: The problem is no longer „in me“, but „there on the board“. This creates immediate emotional relief.
• New perspectives: We can literally turn the problem around. What does the situation look like from the customer's or boss's perspective?
• Simulate solutions: Changes can be tested without having immediate consequences in reality. „What if this character took a step back?“
