What is a system board and why is it so effective?

A system board (often called a family board) is a method for literally „laying out“ inner images and unconscious relationship structures. By visualizing figures, complex dynamics suddenly become tangible.

This „aha effect“ from the view from above is based on three psychological mechanisms:

• Externalization: The problem is no longer „in me“, but „there on the board“. This creates immediate emotional relief.
• New perspectives: We can literally turn the problem around. What does the situation look like from the customer's or boss's perspective?
• Simulate solutions: Changes can be tested without having immediate consequences in reality. „What if this character took a step back?“

What happens methodically can be described well: A story told in a linear fashion becomes a picture in which all participants are present at the same time. This is the only way to really experience the interactions - the dynamics that can only ever be discussed one after the other in a conversation.

When is it worth using the system board?

The method is particularly powerful in situations where pure conversation comes up against a perceived wall:

• For relationship issues in a family, couple or team context in which several people are intertwined
• In decision-making situations with several options whose emotional coloring is difficult to grasp in conversation
• In the event of role conflicts in a professional context, for example between manager, team, customers and yourself
• In phases of transition - Change of career, retirement, change of life phase - when the old system is reorganized
• For internal parts, when voices in your own chest fight for attention and block each other out

Experienced coaches report that the visualization itself - even before a single question is asked - often leads to the first insights. The arrangement of the figures speaks for itself.

From the analog wooden board to the digital system board
