About Thomas Gehlert
I am writing these lines with a very heavy heart. It took me some time to be able to do so. Some time until my soul recovered from the heavy blow and the numbness could be overcome.
On April 28, 2026, I learned that Thomas Gehlert had died.
I notice how I search for words - and pause again and again. Because Thomas wasn't someone you could simply describe. And perhaps not someone you can really „close“ either.
Thomas was a person who saw. Not just the obvious. But what was behind it. The in-between. He perceived connections that others often overlooked, and he was able to put them into thoughts that were valid - which is precisely why they had such a profound effect.
His wisdom was something very special. Warm and connecting. He created worlds of thought. He could depict the world without simplifying it. He was able to hold complexity without losing it. And he found words that didn't just explain - he set things in motion.
I was often amazed at how precisely he was able to grasp things. And how carefully he handled them at the same time.
And then there was that smile.
That calm, friendly smile that was never artificial.
It came from its depths. From a subtle, benevolent attitude towards life and people. I can see it so clearly in front of me. And it is precisely this smile that is missing now.
His departure leaves more than just a gap. It leaves a palpable void.
Because with him, someone has gone who not only made the world more understandable for many of us - but also more human.
I am grateful to have known him.
... and I miss him.
